On 12/4/2019 workshop was held on the topic “INTEGRATED TEACHING” organized by Ratna sagar chaired by Dr.C.G.Bhaskar.

The main theme of the workshop was based on how students could relate a particular topic to various subjects in their curriculum, which helps in thinking differently and creatively. The session was started with the comfort zone of the children followed by interdisciplinary skills. The seven C’s of teaching(challenging, controlling, consolidating, clarifying, conferring, captivating, caring). Next it was headed by an activity for the application of the integrated teaching based on a newspaper activity provided with various props to include in the project created by the teachers. Everybody participated with an enthusiasm and performed very well.

Followed by a couple of circle activities to inculcate the habit of collaborative learning, skills, teamwork, mutual respect, observation in the classroom. Object analysis and phenomenal analysis was done with integrating a topic with various subjects.

We had a great workshop learning many things and try to be a facilitator rather than a teacher.

It was also briefed about the Multiple Intelligences advocated by the Psychologist Howard Gardener. According to him all human beings have multiple intelligences. These intelligences can be nurtured and strengthened.

The 8 Multiple Intelligence are here as follows:

  • 1. Linguistic: Children with this kind enjoy writing, reading, telling stories or doing crossword puzzles.
  • 2. Logical Mathematical: Children with this kind are interested in patterns, strategy games and experiments.
  • 3. Naturalistic: Ability to recognise and categorise plants, and other objects related to nature.
  • 4. Interpersonal: Children who are leaders among the rest of the children, and who are good at communication.
  • 5. Musical: Children of this kind will always be singing or humming to themselves. They usually are aware of the sound that others may miss. Ex: When it rains they enjoy the sound of it, the sound of shoes which others do not notice.
  • 6. Spatial: Here children may be fascinated by spending time with puzzles, drawing, block buildings etc.
  • 7. Body Kinaesthetic: These children are hyperactive children. They are often athletes, dancers, etc.
  • 8. Intrapersonal: These Children are very much aware of their own feelings and are self motivated.

The teachers were oriented about the importance of assessing the multiple intelligence in all the children in classroom through simple observations. The workshop concluded with the interactive activities for teachers to help them understand the application of the 8 multiple intelligences.

They formed groups and each of the groups was given a subject related topic where ideas had to be planned on the basis of all 8 intelligences. Overall it was a highly interactive and informative workshop.

Day 2 - Workshop on Happy Classroom ( April 03, 2019) :-

Esteemed resource persona Mrs.Abak Chatterjee conducted a 6 hour long session on “A happy Classroom”. This seminar was attended by teachers from I-X Grade. The session was power packed with activities, games and videos and anecdotes. A happy classroom strives towards the acceptance of every single child by making them an ally and not a soldier who follows orders. It was taught that a happy classroom empowers students thereby increasing meaningful academic learning. It also facilitates social and emotional growth, and decreases negative behaviour. The following techniques and aspects of a happy classroom were discussed elaborately on;

  • Time Management,
  • Types of classroom management styles,
  • Motivating factors,
  • Response to stimulus,
  • Stress,
  • Assertive skills,
  • Classroom seating arrangement,
  • Classroom strategies,
  • Mc Gregor’s Theory X and Theory Y.

Often a teacher’s happiness or state of mind is overlooked. The truth is, a cup can only pour out what it is filled with and the same applies with teachers. A happy teacher exudes happiness, and a frustrated teacher spreads her frustration.

Therefore regular introspection will be helpful to remind teachers why they got into teaching in the first place. Teachers should encourage children to introspect more in order to build their morale.

Here are a few pointers to achieve a happy classroom;

  • Imbibe morals and values in children and discourage materialism.
  • Set a good example for your students to follow.
  • Keep reminding the children to show gratitude lest they will take everything for granted.
  • Teachers must put in special efforts to push children to overcome various negativities and direct them to think positive using motivational techniques.
  • Introduce concepts of constantly sharing and caring.
  • Practise meditation to instantly calm down the children.
  • All children not necessarily need to be corrected by being reprimanded. Many a time counselling can throw light upon the root cause.
  • Build on confidence and dreams which shouldn’t be tangible, (ex: Push children to dream to become an honest and earnest being).

A happy classroom isn’t hard to maintain if the teachers equip themselves with the techniques discussed and have a strong will to take up the challenge. Your happy classroom will make the teaching and learning process fun and weave wonders for the children’s future.

Theatre Culmination Day 2019: Report:-

I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being. -Thornton Wilder

Who am I?

Actors were asked to get their mother’s saree and father’s shirt/t-shirt, along with a childhood memory- A favourite toy, dolls, first year birthday photograph, or a favourite thing with which have an emotional bonding.

All the actors (boy and girls) were dressed up in a same attire- mother’s saree as a dhoti on a white t-shirt and colourful veils tied on the waist. The whole idea was to emphasize on gender neutrality and evoke an emotion within about their existence and also to make them understand family relationships.

Performace!

Play began playing various desi games on stage, singing various children songs, enacting Shakespear’s ‘All the world a stage’, expressing the Navarasas (emotions), a musical orchestra- demonstrating sound patterns through voices. Four Abhinayas of Acting: Angika, Vachika, Aaharya and Sathvika. Concluded with a short play- No war, please!

Audience turned actors!

That's the magic of theatre: it has the power to transform an audience or an individual, to get revelation experience that changes their life, opens their hearts and their minds and the way they think.

Theatre Culmination day 2019, witnessed a good number of parents participating in the workshop conducted on community building. After the performance- actor’s parents, grandparents, siblings were requested to join for a workshop. At first, many found to be very hesitant to participate. But soon after the second call, they volunteered and stood up for the session!

Initially, they were asked to walk around the empty space and feel comfortable, then a command was given to interact with three strangers and were asked to introduce themselves- saying out their names and date of birth. Later each one of them introduced one another to the whole team. Yes, the ice broke amongst the audience and their inhibitions too. Next stage of the session was to join their children for a group improvisation on various topics: body as a tool to create various objects, alphabets, numbers and a group scene enactment and so on.

Hence, the parents and their children came together performing as actors with a fun filled session!

Spot light on various issues:

  • Gender Neutrality: Gender is given too much importance. We should be able to see humans as humans! Gender neutral parenting attempts to parent in ways that you don’t reinforce the stereotypes or preconceived notions that have traditionally defined gender roles.
  • Young adults: Puberty and psychological issues.
  • Exam pressure- Passion and Profession.
  • Dyslexia- difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters & other symbols but that do not affect general intelligence.
  • Television- An idiot box.
  • Food habits
  • Anti-War: Peace must prevail. Child saying her friend to go out of the country!

Kindergarten Day - Kids world Classes; -Nursery & LKG:-

An event eagerly looked forward to, in our annual year book is the Kid’s World Annual Day. It is the culmination of the year’s efforts, filled with a mixed bag of joys, successes, tensions and pains. Through all these situations the teacher stands tall and stoic and brings out every bit of talent, in every child assigned to her. Today’s show was a magical output of Indian dances of various states from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, with a grand finale of patriotic songs set to a lovely pattern of dance. The children of LKG AND NURSERY, who are aged just about 3 to 4 years, put up an amazing show of synchronising their tiny feet and small arms to the beats of the music and it seemed as if the songs too, were on their lips. The colourful costumes and accessories added to the aura of the dances. The chief guest was the Provincial Superior Sr. Mini (Provincial superior), and other guests included Sr.Siji our Principal, Sr.Jiji (Superior of Aradhana Convent), Sr.Shiny (Treasurer), and Sr. Lalitha (Treasurer of the Society). The enthusiasm of the parents was extremely heart warming and they had turned up in large numbers.

The PPT presentations added a special beautiful dimension to the entire show.
